  • A friend is setting me up on a blind date, but I never seem to say the right thing when I'm nervous. What's the surest way to make a good first impression?

  • We thought it best to get not just an expert, but a woman, to weigh in so we asked Joanna Goddard, the popular Smitten blogger for Glamour to offer five first date pointers.

Tips

1

Take a shot before your date. Seriously. Just one. It calms the nerves.

2

When you meet up, smile and compliment anything (really, anything) that she's wearing. Flattery gets you everywhere.

3

Ask her how her day was. She'll be touched and you already seem suave and sweet.

4

Ask how she knows your mutual friend. (Look! You already have something in common.)

5

Travel is a fun topic for everyone, so ask if she's going on any fun trips soon. You'll get a peek into what makes her tick.

Biased Advice

Wear jeans and a white button-down shirt. "It will make you look crisp, clean and classic," says Goddard.
