For skeptical sci-fi fans

The Day the Earth Stood Still

The original Day stands as both of-its-time and timeless. Stark black-and-white cinematography and rudimentary special effects place it among the creature features of its day. But the film's message against the Cold War allowed audiences to see the world's problems through the prism of the fantastic. The remake, starring Keanu Reeves as the alien warning Earth of its current path, certainly could improve on the effects ... but what about the greater themes? So far, sci-fi fans tread toward this movie about as apprehensively as they do asking for a first date. - Hank Brockett
