Most of us think of mouthwash as simply a minty mask for bad breath. But really, the best ones are like medicine for your mouth. According to the American Dental Association, these rinses can help control and prevent tooth decay, strengthen enamel and prevent gingivitis, all while reducing plaque and tartar. And here's the good news: unlike the rinses of years past, you don't have to feel the burn. It's alcohol that is responsible for the sting and you don't want that in your rinse anyway. "Alcohol dries your mouth and can burn gum and cheek tissue," says New York dentist Michael Apa, D.D.S. Whichever bottle you end up buying, remember to swish and spit after flossing and brushing, says Dr. Apa. It's the best way to remove any plaque or germs left behind and keep your breath fresh. Which is really what it's all about, right?
