The Craft Beer

in the Rye

While Southern beverage history may be rooted in mint juleps and sweet iced tea, the folks at Terrapin Brewing Company in Athens, Georgia are looking to change that. Terrapin brewed its first microbrew, the Rye Pale Ale, in early 2002, but quickly perfected the process on its way to winning the American Pale Ale Gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival later that year. Seven years later, it remains Terrapin's flagship brew.  This unique beer is crafted from rye grains (uncommon in microbrews), five select hops and a selection of malts that give it a medium bodied, floral flavor that's crisp and clean, never overpowering nor too sweet. The beer's available throughout the South as well as Virginia and D.C. now, but its reputation is quickly making its way up the east coast. So look for Terrapin at your local pubs and specialty stores because it may just be the best beer you've never heard of.
