Customized Cardigans

Styling Tip

A chunky knit like this calls for equally heavy-duty gear, rolled up jeans with brogues or hiking boots would go great. Up top, a shirt in a tough fabric like flannel or chamois keeps things rugged, especially when worn untucked with the cardigan placket unbuttoned.

Before it gets freezing, I find that a cardigan makes an ideal outerwear piece. When the mercury's still in the 60s, you don't even need another layering piece. A nice chunky knit with classic styling and a shawl collar channel autumn perfectly and looks way better than one of those ubiquitous fleece half-zips. Ralph Lauren makes some of my favorites, and while most of the RRL pieces will stay in my "aspirational buy" categories, Rugby usually has a good balance between price and quality. I recently discovered that they're offering a nice shawl-collar cardigan in their "Make Your Own" offerings now. Available in navy blue or black cotton, you have the option of personalizing it with patches and a monogram. Varsity-inspired cardigans may be having a moment right now, but throwing on a patch is still a bold move and not for everybody. The sizes go all the way from XS to XXL, perfect for a range of guys.

$148, available in black and navy, at Rugby
