Back to Basics

In the '90s, Gap's crisp khakis and T-shirts were synonymous with catchy advertising and the go-to uniform of every other member of Generation X. So much so, that in the seminal '90s film Reality Bites, Janeane Garofolo's character worked at The Gap. While plenty of their success can be pinned to then-CEO Mickey Drexler (who's since taken his talents to J.Crew), it's refreshing to see Gap going back to the sort of stuff they were always known for: a relaxed but stylish uniform of American staples.

Sweatshirt, $45

Because while the brand's revamped denim resonated with guys, the clothing for the past few seasons has been going through a bit of an awkward phase in regard to design and fit. Thankfully, their new Icon Shop features everyday favorites like lived-in khakis, modern oxfords and sweatshirts with updated fits and throwback details. By no means will the goods blow away seasoned menswear fanatics, but the slimmer fit and higher armholes on the shirts give the average guy a leg up in the style department. And the price points don't hurt at all, either.

Styling Tip

Break in your oxfords even more by sticking them in the washer instead of having them dry cleaned. Make sure to let them air dry, and refrain from putting them in the dryer.
