The Brick-Soled Chukka Spectrum

Styling Tip

Instead of getting a whole new pair, have your Goodyear-welted chukkas resoled with a red brick sole—or the bolder ripple sole seen here on The Midwestyle.

The desert boot is one of those shoes that will never go out of style. But that doesn't mean it's not up for a reinterpretation now and again. This fall, instead of the usual crepe soles, the classic chukka underwent a sea change. Taking a cue from the suede buck, another footwear mainstay, we're seeing red brick soles and other unconventional takes on the familiar shoe. From Barneys' all-over camo versions to timeless Snuff Suede chukkas from Alden, here are some stellar shoes worth considering, in a range of prices.

J.Crew, $168

A new take on their popular MacAllister boot, this is crafted from Italian leather with waxed cotton laces.

Walk-Over, $269

These Goodyear-welted chukkas are made in America and are as elegant as they are easy to wear.

Alden, $460

Not exactly a brick sole, but the casual "flex-welt" means breaking in these American-made boots is a cinch.

Leffot, $580

Made in England with a narrower toe and a Dainite sole, they call these "smart casual."
