The Jacket Alternative

Dressing for transitional weather is never easy. Especially during the awkward period between summer and fall. While shorts and tank tops are easy to gauge in terms of being appropriate for the weather, the same can't be said for outerwear. But if you're looking for something that's heavier than a regular shirt, but not as heavy as a full-on jacket, check out this twist from J.Crew's vintage-inspired label Wallace & Barnes. One part jean jacket and one part chambray shirt, the midweight denim shirt is cut from a substantial denim fabric, but in the familiar, tailored fit of a button-down. Wear it buttoned-up on windy days, or open with a tee underneath and the sleeves rolled up for a casual feel in warmer weather.

$98, at J.Crew

Styling Tip

Thinking about wearing this with jeans? Just make sure the denim is noticeably different in tone.
