Back in 2011, LA-based Aether worked with Parisian designer Thierry Gaugain for the AetherStream, a sleek retrofitted Airstream trailer turned into a roving pop-up shop. This year, they've teamed up to open Aether's first retail store, located in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, and the place is, in a word: Badass. They've built the shop out of three shipping containers stacked on top of one another. Each floor is just eight feet wide, which means the sleek shelves are carefully organized with neatly folded gear. Need a size? Nearly everything is arranged on a mechanized conveyor system, not unlike the one at your dry cleaner—except this one is vertical and spans three floors. The space itself is a mix of styles, one part industrial minimalism and one part rustic, with knotty wood floors and built-in fixtures, as well as photo walls depicting serene nature scenes. Our favorite spot? The glass-encased lounge, cantilevered over the shop's entrance and outfitted with two midcentury modern Eames Lounge chairs.
