The Case for
the Hemp T-Shirt

With 4/20 looming, it's an appropriate time to talk about the benefits of hemp T-shirts, right? I first discovered the hemp-loving brand Jungmaven through their awesome tie dye T-shirts. They fit great, are super comfortable and have a cool, psychedelic vibe without looking like they belong at a Grateful Dead concert. But Jungmaven also make some pretty great basic tees in a bunch of solid garment-dyed colors like white, navy, army green and black. At around $30 each, they're a bit pricey for a basic shirt, but it's also an investment in the environment. These American-made hemp blend tees cut down on one of the single biggest water wasters: cotton. The difference in producing a hemp T-shirt and a cotton one? About 300 gallons of water—and that's per shirt. Hemp is also one of the most versatile materials on the planet, about 25,000 different products can be made from it. It doesn't take too much time to grow (only about 100 days) and to top it off, it replenishes soil and requires absolutely no pesticides.
