Varsity jackets replaced letterman sweaters in the mid 1930s.

The Varsity Spectrum

The varsity jacket has been enjoying a resurgence for the past couple of years because it's an easy, all-American choice for outerwear. Most have a lean, athletic look while still offering ample room for movement and layering. This year, however, it seems like things have taken a turn to the dark side as the best looking options are the all-black styles. They definitely have a smarter, more modern feel. Here are four of the best, in a range of price points.

Gap, $248

A lightweight but still substantial option, this slim-fitting jacket is cut from wool and buffalo leather with trim sleeves along with a narrow ribbed collar and cuffs.

7 Diamonds, $295

More of a modern Ivy interpretation, this tailored jacket features a leather snap-placket overlay, zippered pockets and a striped waistband and cuffs.

Unis, $428

Made in the USA, this contemporary take offers a lean bomber-style silhouette with set-in calfskin leather sleeves. Even the snap buttons are black.

Club Monaco, $450

A truly vintage-inspired piece, with a heavy wool body, natural-toned sleeves and finished with real horn buttons and leather-trimmed slant pockets.
