Filson's New Seattle Flagship

The outdoor outfitter takes the store to the next level.

When Alex Carleton, Filson's creative director, took the reins of the 118-year-old heritage brand last year, he saw it as a unique opportunity. Not to reinvent the storied outdoor outfitter altogether, but rather help it grow and modernize while enriching what they already do so well. "It's not about creating false narratives or themes," says Carleton. "It's about staying true to what we do best and uncovering all the unique people using Filson in their everyday life—they're the ones out in the world field testing our products." Along with their expanded product line of slimmer fits, upgraded bags and Shinola-built timepieces, Filson has also just opened a proper flagship store in their hometown of Seattle.

Carleton recently walked us through the sweeping 6,400 square foot retail space, where no detail went unconsidered. Referencing such iconic WPA building projects as Mt. Hood's Timberline Lodge, every corner of the shop was overseen by local artisans and craftsmen. A third-generation blacksmith forged the iron hardware, a local artist carved a towering cubist totem pole in the store's two-story entryway. There's a period-specific wood-burning fireplace and even the dressing rooms have been uniquely built—the wood walls have been charred, resulting in a rich color and a hearty cabin aroma.

Adding to the authenticity, windows look into the adjacent factory where new bags and apparel are being produced. Back inside the shop, the brand's restoration department has its own open-kitchen area where they're doing repairs and restitching lovingly worn-out bags. With plenty of nooks to explore, rare antiques and a knowledgeable staff ready to recommend the best places to use your new gear, it's clear that Filson has built more than just a store here.
