Menswear veteran and Valet's Editor at Large, Michael Macko, presents an insider's take on what's new and noteworthy in the world of style.

Just the Facts: Early Fall Prints

Who:

What:

Ikat pants, $198 and shirt, $168

Where:

Available at Barneys CO-OP and Ron Herman

When:

Early September

Why:

Summer has just begun to wind down (next week I'll officially start writing about autumn clothes), and stores are already filling shelves with sweaters and winter coats. But it'll be a while before we really need any heavy layers. So it's good to know that some designers still have your backs covered, if ever so lightly. Doug and Ben Burkman are definitely of the "buy now/wear now" school of design. These may be fall clothes, but you can start enjoying them right away. The brothers are also on top of the small print trend—with a great pair of ikat printed chinos along with a traditionally woven ikat chambray shirt. The look reflects their theme this season of "Hiking in the Himalayas", and it will certainly make giving up weekends at the beach easier as well.

FYI

Ikat is an Indonesian method of weaving threads that are bound and then dyed—a process similar to traditional tie-dyeing.
