Learn to tie a bow tie with Hart's hilarious and informative silent film.

Ties, $150 and bow ties, $115 (available in Feb.) at Bergdorf Goodman and David Hart & Co.

The Tie Guy

"It started off, as it always does, with a girl," says tie designer David Hart. "I was convinced to take home economics, but when the girls starting asking me for help, I thought I might have a career as a designer." After studying design at FIT, Hart worked for several big names in the biz like Anna Sui and Tommy Hilfiger before branching out on his own. His upcoming line of trim ties is hand-crafted here in the states with whimsical designs from sock monkeys to saddle shoes. Our favorite is an artful take on the rough horsehair canvas one would find on the inside of a well-made suit. "I love the art of tailoring," he says. "So I'm currently getting all my ducks in a row to move below the neck." (Photos: Jeremy Nelson)

  • Oscar de la Renta once told Hart he resembled a young Yves Saint Laurent.
