The Polo Shirt Spectrum

When the weather gets this hot, a pique cotton polo shirt offers simple relief. The knit fabric is made up of tiny holes, which let air circulate around the body and, perhaps even more importantly, absorb sweat and let it evaporate. And the good thing is that you can get them nearly everywhere. Herewith, some of the season's best in a range of price points.

J.Crew, $25

The cotton pique is washed for softness with a vintage fit and a slight tennis tail. The sleeves are trim with ribbed cuffs and the collar's got a repp stripe lining.

Billy Reid, $67

Made in Canada from six ounce slub pique cotton with a classic fit. The sleeves aren't ribbed and the longer, narrow placket has natural Mother of Pearl buttons.

Ralph Lauren, $75

The "custom fit" polo has a trimmer fit along with shorter hems and sleeves than a classic fit polo. It's cut from a breathable cotton mesh with an longer tennis tail.

Lacoste, $88

The new vintage washed polo is thicker than the standard pique polo and has a tailored, retro fit. A special dye fades the more you wash it for a personal patina.

Gucci, $385

Made in Italy with shell buttons from a light, ultra soft cotton blend (hand wash only). The fit is lean and tapered with high arm holes and it's trimmed in signature red and green stripes.
