The Summer Sweater

When it's hot and humid outside, the last thing you're thinking about is pulling on anything too heavy or scratchy. But as we dip into August, an all-season sweater makes for an ideal layering piece—light and breathable enough to prevent you from overheating when the sun's out and cozy enough to keep you (or your date) warm at night or near the water. And while some people might tout the benefits of summer-weight cashmere, we're advocating plain old cotton. A simple cotton sweater is soft, strong enough to last for years and has a certain sea-faring charm. Plus, when it gets dirty, you can easily throw it in the washing machine and then let it air dry. Opt for a neutral shade that will pair well with everything from cut off shorts and white jeans to dressier chinos.
