Spring Checklist

"It's the oldest story in the book," says Gavin O'Malley, when asked about his savvy men's shopping blog, The Choosy Beggar. "It was something I wanted and couldn't find, so I did it myself." The New York-based trade journalist always has the inside track on the best brands, sales and launches, so we asked him for the first three purchases he'll be making this spring.

1)

Tote bags are enjoying a moment but most are too cute for their own good. Filson's tin cloth tote ($100) is equal parts unassuming, (quite literally) strapping and smart. And, as with any Filson product, these bags are guaranteed to become trusted standbys for years to come.

2)

During the warmer months, socks are a superfluous distraction. Unlike most sock-optional footwear that can ravage your dogs, J.Crew's broken-in suede Top-Siders ($98) combine Snuggie-like comfort with truly classic looks. (Accompany your purchase with a bottle of Dr. Scholl's Foot Powder.)

3)

A well-fitting T-shirt is critical to every guy's uniform, and for reasons that are difficult to articulate, I'm never happier than when wearing BDG crew necks ($14-$18). Just the right shape, weight and stretch. Add a few Steven Alan button-downs and my torso is covered all season long.

The Expertly Packed Carry-On

Question

What should I pack for my first business trip?

- Matt, OH

Answer

With nearly every airline imposing a baggage fee nowadays, if you can get away with flying with just a carry-on, do it.
