The Pants: Refined Cargos

There's a subtle trick to reviving old styles. It needs to be reminiscent of yesterday but somehow feel very much "right now." Cargo pants may still have a bad reputation from the bloated, saggy styles walking college campuses, but the ones lately seem to be getting better and smarter looking. When they're tailored to fit your frame, with minimal distressing and streamlined pockets (often found on the front instead of the sides), the pants give off a rugged yet refined charm. "I love how versatile they are—styled with a chunky knit or a fitted blazer—they're a great new take on something pretty basic," says Alex Carleton, the creative director for L.L. Bean Signature. "They're nostalgic and functional and our's are great because they say adventure and outdoors while being slim and modern at the same time." Here are some of the season's standouts.

The Pants

FYI
Cargo pants were introduced by the British Army in 1938 with one side pocket and one on the front hip.
