Lessons in Looking Good
What you can learn from the icons of yesterday and today.

  • After Hurricane Katrina, Gosling drove down to Biloxi, Mississippi by himself to help rebuild a monastery.
With

Ryan Gosling

Sure, the chiseled features and bonafide movie star status can't hurt but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone, male or female, who'd say Ryan Gosling isn't doing things right in the looks department these days. The actor's got a knack for balancing classic proportions with calculated style risks. Whether mixing a pajama shirt with crisp white pants or simply throwing on a fitted leather jacket with jeans, Gosling stands out in a crowd while still looking timeless and at ease. Recently, he's been wearing his hair cropped close on the sides and just long enough on top to comb it into a soft side part. When it comes to jewelry, he keeps it simple: an interesting ring at times and an understated, but luxurious watch like the Jaeger LeCoultre he's been sporting lately. Schooling Steve Carell in his new film "Crazy, Stupid, Love" (out July 29), he shares the importance of a quality haircut, a well cut blazer and confidence. Sentiments that Gosling clearly agrees with.

The Takeaway
1
Focus on fit. Have jackets and pants taken in when needed. Gosling prefers his tees to fit like Brando's and so should you.
2
Keep hair tight on the sides and a little longer on top. Use a styling cream and pull hair sideways and back with your fingers into a part.
3
When it comes to accessories, keep it timeless. Classic sunglasses, Swiss-made watches and simple jewelry will never fail.
