It's been over three decades since Tom Cruise immortalized the role of Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell with one of the coolest catchphrases in cinema history: "I feel the need... the need for speed." And it was just announced that the classic film will start shooting a sequel sometime next year. Which got us thinking about the original and how much swagger Maverick and Goose had in the movie. First shown in theaters in May of 1986, the style is at times ageless thanks to such standard issue military icons as aviators and bomber jackets, but it's also got the bold, MTV-influenced style of the era in which it was filmed—pieces that just happen to be coming back around. Graphic tees, bold shorts and washed denim? Well as the film's tagline says, they're "up there with the best of the best."
