Tortoiseshell
Aviators

Tortoiseshell, a perennial prepster favorite, has been popping up everywhere it seems. But no more than in chunky acetate aviators. With gradient amber tints and slightly squared-off lenses, the shades have a slick 1960s mod styling. In fact, Oliver Goldsmith's "Carl" frames were originally released in Britain back in 1967. We're not saying they're anymore individual than the omni-present Wayfarer, we're just providing the option. And clearly, there are some options.

  • 1973. The year trade of real stuff--the shell of the hawksbill sea turtle--was banned worldwide. It still remains an endangered species.

Gucci "Navigator"
$320 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Modern Amusement "31"
$175 at Modern Amusement.

Generic "Turbo"
$18 at Urban Outfitters.

Ksubi "Hancock"
$210, Ksubi.

Oliver Goldsmith "Carl"
$330 at LA Eyeworks in Los Angeles, Jeffery in New York and Au Courant in Bal Harbour.
