Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School—the winner of the 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and rising stars of the menswear world—offer Details a glimpse inside their growing business. The duo talk about why they don't mind being labeled strong and sensitive, and how their collection allows guys to both stand out and blend in.
What are
the biggest challenges you've faced growing your line?
Chow
We've come from doing everything ourselves: production, tech-ing, spec-ing, even packing and shipping and warehousing. As our team grew, it was challenging for us to manage specific parts of the business— if I didn't know it, and Max didn't know it, then no one knew it. We're learning how to be better about that. Luckily, we have a great team now.
Osborne
Like J.Crew [All CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners create capsule collections for J.Crew], which took us away from the office for a bit. We trust that the staff is getting their work done. A lot of little things we might not have had the time to do before just wouldn't have happened. We'd have to say no. Now we're able to do it, like this interview.
