Red Handed

You never know what you'll find when you unpack a box of samples from a designer. Recently, we were hanging a pair of pants and something was rattling in the pocket. I pulled out a small pouch that looked like an oversized tea bag. It took a second but then it hit me: hand warmers. Wherever these pants were shot previously, that was either one clever model or a very kind stylist, as these little beauties can be a life saver on wet, bone-chilling days. Disposable ones usually keep their heat for 30 minutes and (bonus!) can be slipped into boots. There are also metal versions, popular with outdoorsy types since the 1950s, known as pocket furnaces. These retro warmers use lighter fuel—there's not an open flame—and they stay even warmer than disposables for up to 12 hours on one fill. Whether you're on the street or the slopes, keep those hands warm and the rest of you won't feel so frigid. - Cory Ohlendorf
