The Quick Trip

A long weekend trip in the winter has many distinct advantages over a longer vacation. For one, the margin of arguing-with-your-travel-companion error is much greater on a lengthier trip. Secondly, you won't feel guilty missing a significant amount of time from work (or worried that skipping out for a prolonged length will cost you one way or another). An impromptu three-day trip gives you the much needed pocket of relaxation and reflection without forking over the cash and logistical brain power a longer stay requires. The key is keeping the transportation time under 3.5 hours to maximize the time at your destination, and sticking to a budget (say $800 to $1,500). So why not take a personal day one Friday soon and book a quick trip? It’s easier to get away than you might think. With that in mind, here are a few simple suggestions to get you pointed in the right direction.

Travel Tips
1

Pack light.

Aim for a backpack and one carry-on suitcase—mobility is the name of the game. Throw a few things in a bag on Thursday after work and head out that night or first thing Friday morning.

2

Do some research.

Once you decide where you want to go, start Googling around for ideas on things you don't want to miss while you're there. We're not saying book back-to-back-to-back garden excursions. But have an idea of what you want to do each day to ensure you're getting your time and money's worth.

3

Use those points.

Quit hoarding those credit card points you've worked hard to earn. You'll be surprised at the reduction in travel costs, especially on last minute trips or upgrades.

4

Be easy.

Remember that this is off-duty time. So enjoy some drinks, go out and explore, read that book you'd never otherwise get to, and if she asks you to dance with her, dance.
