The Winter Suit

Before central heating, before Gore-tex and performance fleece-lined topcoats, there was the winter suit. Cut from hearty wool, tweed or flannel, they add a little weight and a lot of warmth to what you wear to the office (or out on the town). Paired with a plaid shirt, or a chunky sweater and a pair of rugged boots, it is the personification of "seasonal dressing." And while the suits today, from labels like Hickey, Steven Alan and Billy Reid, are slimmed down for a modern guy, take a styling tip from the men who wore them back in the day—pull on a scarf and maybe a hat, but feel free to leave the overcoat at home.

Swap your silks for a winter-weight wool tie. Pair it with a suit like this and a cotton oxford shirt and you're set.
