Winterize Your Skin

Cold, windy and wet conditions outside and drying, furnace-fueled heat indoors makes for brutal conditions. Your skin is often left either dry, cracked and flaky, or painfully tight, splotchy and burning. Good times, right? The only defense is to keep your skin as healthy and hydrated as possible. And despite how good a hot shower feels in the morning, Andrew Goetz—one half of the apothecary brand Malin + Goetz—advises against it. "That's the number one mistake guys make in the winter," he says. "I know they feel nice, but they'll dehydrate your skin very quickly." Aim for lukewarm showers until March and follow these tips to get some cold comfort.

Moisturize

Face

This vitamin-rich lotion is lightweight and oil-free and its calming properties will reduce redness and soothe post-shave skin.

$45 by Malin + Goetz

Body

Save your dough with a simple cocoa butter that absorbs quickly, so don't worry about moisturizing before work.

$7 by Queen Helene

Hands

Keep this greaseless fragrance-free oatmeal-based lotion near your desk and reapply a few times a day.

$7 by Aveeno

Slough in the Shower

Use a wash cloth to gently scrub your skin all over. This helps with itchiness and stimulates circulation and boosts your body's natural oils. For a flaky scalp, use a teatree shampoo that also softens dry hair.

Hydrate from the Inside

Nutrition can play a big factor in winter skin as well. Take an Omega-3 supplement or snack on walnuts, blueberries and raspberries. Eat foods rich in vitamin A (sweet potatoes, carrots and dark, leafy greens), which strengthens skin and allows it to create new layers.
