Second only to bacon perhaps, peanut butter is one of the best guy-friendly foods around. And it's a hell of a lot better for you than bacon. Invented in 1890 as a meat protein substitute, this simple spread of ground up peanuts is actually healthier than you might expect. A two-tablespoon serving is chock-full of protein, fiber and vital nutrients. It's cholesterol and trans-fat free and has the same healthy fats as olive oil. So, if you haven't enjoyed the stuff outside of a PB&J, here are a few ideas that do a body good.
If you're not big on breakfast or want something before a workout, blend a tablespoon of peanut butter with a scoop of chocolate protein powder, a cup of milk and a frozen banana for an easy, muscle-building shake.
Make a quick dip for fruit slices or carrots by mixing two tablespoons of peanut butter with a cup of greek yogurt, some honey and a few dashes of cinnamon.
A spicy peanut sauce is great for all sorts of Asian-inspired meals. You can use it as a dipping sauce for satays, mix it in with pasta or top a stir-fry with it. Sauté some minced garlic and ginger for a minute before adding a cup of water, ½ cup of peanut butter and ¼ cup soy sauce. Finish with two tablespoons of vinegar, 3 tablespoons of brown sugar and a teaspoon of red pepper flakes.
