Southern Style

Question
I'm off to Atlanta ... Is there any menswear shopping worth knowing about? Is the fact that Billy Reid has a shop everywhere in the South but Atlanta a dire sign?
- Joel, Brooklyn, NY
Answer

You'll definitely want to stop at Sid Mashburn's eponymous boutique in Atlanta's West Midtown neighborhood. Mississippi-born and Manhattan-trained, Mashburn cut his teeth designing for the likes of J.Crew and Ralph Lauren before striking out to create his dream boutique: an old school haberdashery meets Milan's 10 Corso Como. It's the type of place where full canvas construction suits can exist with Filson bags and Quoddy blucher mocs. "And Atlanta was the right fit," says the Southern gent. "The people, the music, the food ... it's a big city that doesn't act like one."

Sid Mashburn, 1198 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, GA 404.350.7135

Sid's signature double-monk-strap shoes, $595, are bench-made in England.

Mashburn's design gigs introduced him to Europe's finest fabric mills, resulting in some of the best house-brand shirts and ties around. Shirts, $175; ties, $95

"People aren't afraid of a little color in the South." Caran d'Ache pens, $20

Musgo Real grooming products, from $10.
