Play it Cool

Unable to find athletic clothes that were both technical and stylish, golfer and former Ironman competitor Ralph Dunning decided to create his own line. His father worked in tailor shops along London's Savile Row for years, which may explain why Dunning's performance pieces—with their fitted shape and classic patterns—look more like something you'd see under a blazer at cocktails as opposed to on the course. I wore one of the gingham shirts to the driving range to review the shirt's range of motion and can report that it allowed for a generous swing, while staying tucked. And though I never got to put it to the test of a full 18 holes, I did have it on at a very hot (and rowdy) bar where some guy spilled beer on me. The woven Coolmax fibers not only wick away sweat, but they do a number on Rolling Rock as well. $125 at Dunning

  • Zach Johnson competed in Dunning when he won the 2007 Masters Tournament.
