The Espadrille

First appearing in the 13th century as simple-soled shoes made for the King of Aragon's foot soldiers, espadrilles were later rediscovered by such legendary men as Hemingway and Picasso. Fast-forward to today, and they're having a moment yet again. The shoes traditionally consist of cotton or canvas uppers, and are anchored by a rope sole made from jute (a durable vegetable fiber).
