As we head into the dead of winter, getting dressed can propose a series of challenges in order to look sharp and stay warm. Here are the six must-haves every guys should have in his closet to make it through the frigid days ahead in style. As illustrated by American designer John Varvatos.

The Sweater Jacket

One part cardigan, one part blazer, it's a smart tailored piece that splits the difference between casual and formal. A sweater like this, in a neutral shade like navy, works as well with a shirt and tie as it does with a henley and a pair of jeans.

Grown Up Gloves

Keeping your digits warm is no excuse to sport puffy, technicolor ski gloves. Reach for slim ones that actually allow for some dexterity. And if you're looking for a more refined look, try a suede pair with a leather palm for added durability and warmth.

The Technical Jacket

When snow or icy rain are part of the occasion, a weather-repellent coat is in order. Look for an all-weather option in a technical fabric that can be layered over your suit or blazer when necessary. (Just remember to make sure it's longer than your suit jacket.)

Rugged Boots

Go for a stealth style that can stand up to the elements outside and still look sharp when worn with a shirt and tie at the office. The more beat up they get, the better they look. These boots are crafted from shrunken calf skin with brass eyelets and waxed laces, and are beyond road-tested (they've been the label's most popular boot for years).

The Standout Scarf

Depending on what else you're wearing, a scarf can be a great way to inject some color, texture or pattern into the rest of your look. Opt for a style that isn't too bulky. One that's stylish yet durable—you don't want it to feel too precious.

The Winter Weight Suit

Cut from a substantial wool or textured fabric like tweed and flannel, this is not your fine, all-season suit. But a bulkier fabric doesn't necessitate a bulkier fit—it should fit as trim as any other suit. Just remember to pair it with sturdy accessories like a wool tie, plaid shirt or the rugged boots mentioned above.
