3 Ways to Wear a Seersucker Shirt

With Gitman Vintage’s Chris Olberding

Chris Olberding of Gitman Vintage

Often times in order to make things better, sometimes you have to look back. Gitman Vintage was formally created in 2008, but the Gitman brand has been making men's shirting since 1932. It's a label that covers all the bases, from classic staples to interesting cuts made from unique prints and fabrics. The man responsible for continuing to push the brand forward is the company's president, Chris Olberding.

Gitman Vintage has developed a rep for their bold prints—think geometric patterns, tie dye and mid-century floral prints. But, the construction of the shirt is what keeps customers returning to re-up on essentials like oxfords. The expertly stitched tailoring, original chalk buttons and the overall handmade quality is why the brand will always make our product roundups anytime we highlight oxfords.

Gitman just launched some new prints in warm-weather fabrics like linen, Panama washer cloth and seersucker. “The blue seersucker stripe is one of my favorite shirts for spring and summer”, says Olberding. The lightweight woven is cut from a 4 oz. puckered cotton—he says it's an old school shirt that can feel incredibly cool when worn the right way. Now that we're ready to start dressing for warmer weather we asked Chris how he'll be wearing his trusty seersucker oxford this summer.

Where did
seersucker
come from?

According to NPR, the southern staple originated in 1907 when a New Orleans merchant began searching for a lighter-weight suit that could withstand the summer heat, humidity and sweat. The blue and white fabric was born, named “Seersucker” from the Persian word for “milk and sugar” in homage to its textured weave.
