Lip Service

If you're not carrying some lip balm this time of year, you probably should be. A simple swipe keeps your lips smooth and crack-free. But which one's the right one? That's more of a personal call. Herewith, six standouts and our thoughts.

Shaped like a thumb drive, it's easy to stash in slim pants. All-natural and made with beeswax, aloe and vitamin E. It comes with an SPF 15 and has a fresh, spearmint taste, but it doesn't seem to last as long on the lips as the others.

This classic brand has had over a hundred years to perfect their recipe and now offers a slew of variations—including this minty green tea version. It has the tingly effectiveness of their medicated version, without the harsh medicinal taste. Plus it stays put on lips for a long time.

Buckler's Chapped Lip Remedy

One of our favorites, this is thicker than the average balm, which means you use less and it stays on longer. The no-shine formula is loaded with nutrients and while the shea butter moisturizes, the peppermint oil cools, soothes and freshens breath.

Buddha Balm Blackout

All natural and organic, this murdered out stick, which is thicker and smoother than the others, conditions lips with shea butter, beeswax and vitamin E. Zinc oxide works as a chemical-free sunblock and there's a subtle vanilla flavor.

Hydro Salve

With a citrusy mojito flavor and thinner formulation, this salve absorbs quickly. This is great for guys that don't like the feel of lip blame on their lips but still want the benefits of hydration. But it may not provide much protection in extreme cold.

Kiehl's Lip Balm #1

Made with rich emollients like lanolin and sweet almond oil, we know some guys swear by this, but it was just too goopy and shiny for us. That being said, it's a great option for those with extremely chapped lips or in climates that need heavy protection from the elements.

The official medical term for
chapped lips is "cheilitis simplex."
