Fall Chinos

Bridging the gap between your jeans and some proper trousers, a pair of sturdy cotton chinos are an essential part of a man's wardrobe. And while they don't have to be tan, chinos are called khakis for a good reason—you can't go wrong with earthy tones ranging from stoney taupes to darker British tans. The key is finding the right pair. Because when the fit and finishing are on point, the look is both tough and relaxed. But you want to sweat the details. Look for a slim, straight cut with a slight taper to the legs, a modern rise and details like slant pockets, which are leaner and cleaner than the more traditional on-seam variety. We've tried on our fair share to bring you the three best bets for your money.

Dockers, $68

Cut from a broken-in cotton twill with a slim, tapered fit and finished with dapper vintage details like a button-flap coin pocket.

Unis, $198

Made in America from a soft Italian cotton and tailored like a pair of dress pants with a traditional tab waist and a signature slim fit.

Closed, $215

A straight-leg style (available in ten shades) crafted in Italy with pick-stitching and a hidden coin pocket in the waistband.

Cuffs 101

How much break you want is a personal choice, but if your pants bunch around your ankles like crushed paper bags, see a tailor. When rolling up your chinos, you'll want to strike a balance between a cuff that looks unfussy and yet still somewhat neat. Make them about an inch wide, fold them over twice, then finish them off by scrunching 'em down a bit.
