I grew up on a farm in Ohio and decided early on to escape the monotony, and live in a big city. After 5 years of filthy subways, juking out vagabonds and concrete claustrophobia, the same things that pushed me away are what pull me back to that quiet rural life on occasion. Feeling especially nostalgic on a recent Sunday, I went for a walk that ultimately took me into the hallowed walls of Carson Street Clothiers, one of menswear's most renowned stores. Because when you're catching feelings, there's no better way to reevaluate your life than with a visit to a place where you'll always be accepted as long as you have a wallet. With fresh air and country roads still on the mind, I ventured to the fall racks flush with all of the season's necessary accoutrements. Then I saw it, a denim workshirt. The snap buttons, the double-chest pockets—this very fresh American made Billy Reid staple was practically speaking to my thoughts. While the $195 may be a little spendy, think about the uses: a regular shirt on a warmer night, as a shirt jacket over a sweatshirt, a layering underneath a top coat or tweed blazer. That's three, but with a little more creativity you could easily have ten uses. With antique distressed brass hardware and a wash that will get better as it ages, this could easily be my go-to fall staple. If you find yourself in New York, check it out at the Carson Street shop on Crosby Street or head to the Billy Reid site to cop it right now.
