The Pants

We know what you're thinking, a style publication advocating sweat pants? And you're right, usually we're offering tips to sharpen your look, but believe it or not, the right pair of sweatpants can do just that.

This fall, the age-old pair of heather gray sweats is getting a shot of style. Labels like J.Crew, James Perse and Save Khaki perfected their pairs with retro details and soft jersey cotton. Ralph Lauren's RRL label offers a slouchy fit, with a button-fly and side-tabs. But it's Band of Outsiders that offers the most subversive (and luxe) take on the classic. Designer Scott Sternberg cut his sweats from French Terry-lined Shetland wool, and tailored them like a pair of chinos—complete with a watch pocket, reinforced knees and a two-inch cuff.

Of course, we're not telling you to sport these at the office. Or at the gym, for that matter. But a well-fitting pair can add to the casual comfort that makes fall weekends so great. Think of guys like Steve McQueen or Muhammad Ali and wear them with white kicks and a well-worn denim jacket. Or for an off-duty prep vibe, layer them with a sweater and a tweed jacket and when the weather dips, a duffle coat (more on those soon).
