Vanity Fair has an interesting article about the restrained lives of the Hollywood elite in the 1950s. When money, emotional traumas and personal doubts were simply not discussed, even by the closest of friends. And LSD, a new "wonder drug" at the time, was readily distributed at $100 a pop to guys like Cary Grant to deal with the stress of cultivating and maintaing his image.

He had transformed himself with a new accent and educated himself about art, clothes, and etiquette, in the process becoming the proverbial man of the world whom every woman wants and every man wants to be.
