Don’t Let
the Gym Wreck Your Face
Smart post-gym skin care that keeps your face as strong as your body

You put in the work at the gym. Your muscles are pumped, your endorphins are firing and you're feeling confident. We know that regular exercise is incredibly rewarding for both our physical and mental health—the best habit to improve your quality of life and longevity. But while exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body, it can also be surprisingly tough on your skin. Sweat, grime and even the supplements you take pre-workout all play a role in how your skin looks and feels.
At its core, exercise is actually good for your complexion. Increased blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to your skin, giving you that temporary post-workout glow. But it's not all upside. Sweat itself isn't the enemy—it's mostly water and salt. The problem is that it mixes with oil (and lingering grooming products), along with bacteria and dead skin cells sitting on your skin. That cocktail, if left to linger, clogs pores and leads to breakouts or rashes. Add in tight workout clothes or a dirty towel, and you're basically trapping that gunk against your skin.
And we get it. If you give your all in the gym, you're exhausted afterwards. But if you skip the right aftercare, you run the risk of breakouts, irritation and a dull complexion. You want to treat your skin as well as you treat your muscles. You'll recover faster, look fresher and get more of that hard-earned glow to stick around. Here's what's really happening to your skin when you train, and how to keep it clear and healthy after every workout.
Your Post-Workout
Game Plan

Lemongrass Tea body wash,
$19.99 by Blind Barber
This is the golden rule, according to dermatologist Knox Beasley, M.D., who works with Hims. The longer sweat, bacteria and oil sit on your skin, the more likely they are to cause problems. Your goal should be to shower within 30 minutes of completing your exercise. A quick, lukewarm rinse will wash away the grime without stripping your skin's natural barrier. Don't neglect your back, chest and shoulders—where guys are less likely to properly clean, but easily develop body acne. But save the hot water for a different time, as it can dry you out.
Wash
Your Face
(Before & After)

Barrier Balancing cleanser,
$30 by Freaks of Nature
Think of it as a two-step defense. A quick cleanse before your workout removes any dirt, sunscreen or product that could mix with sweat (and get in your eyes). If you don't wash before, that trio of sweat, bacteria and oil can get trapped in pores along with heat, which inflames the skin and leads to irritation and flare-ups. After you're done, use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to reset your skin. Skip anything too harsh—your skin's already in a sensitive state.
Rehydrate
(Inside & Out)
Drink water as soon as you can. And don't neglect your skin: Apply a lightweight moisturizer or hydrating gel with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Your skin just lost a lot of moisture through sweat, so this is about replenishment.
Apply
Protection
SPF 30 Day cream,
$36 by Anthony
If you're heading outside after your workout, sunscreen is non-negotiable. Post-exercise, your skin is more vulnerable to environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution. A lightweight SPF 30 (or higher) keeps you protected without feeling greasy.
Gym Bag Dopp Kit

Wired pouch,$40 / $28 by Puebco
Store and transport your grooming essentials or other items in Puebco's durable neoprene pouch. The exterior is smoky gray, while the interior is bright neon green, making it easy to spot products inside and has additional mesh pockets for easy-to-lose items.
Wipes
If you’re in a rush, or don’t have access to a shower immediately, keep some facial wipes in your bag. It’s not perfect, but it’ll hold you over until you can properly wash up. Oars + Alps ($20 for 14) have been our go-to for years. They’re cooling, packed with quality ingredients and they work on both your face and body.
