from Hugh Hefner

Hugh Hefner once famously quipped, "Life is too short to be living somebody else's dream." And he would know. No one in modern history lived his dream more than Hef. After being denied a small raise while working at Esquire, he quit and cobbled together eight grand—just enough to start his own magazine from his kitchen table.

Playboy magazine, of course, went on to become more than a global business empire. It became a symbol for sexual freedom, indulgence and the ultimate pursuit of pleasure. Not surprisingly, Hefner received his fair share of criticism from those who accused him of exploiting women. He argued that he was empowering them, while providing a platform for feminist essays to be published. And many forget that he was also an early activist for civil rights and gay rights, not to mention a champion for women's reproductive rights and the decriminalization of marijuana. Here are ten deep thoughts from the man who knew how to enjoy life and be true to himself.

"A lot of people go through life never quite understanding that if things aren't as wonderful as they should be, it's their own fault."

It's good to be selfish. But not so self-centered that you never listen to other people."

"Living in the moment, thinking about the future, and staying connected to the past: That's what makes me feel whole."

"Most people don't have much of a clue as to why they act the way they do. Usually when they're angry, they're not angry about what they think they're angry about."

"If you let society and your peers define who you are, you're the less for it."

"If you don't encourage healthy sexual expression in public, you get unhealthy sexual expression in private. What we've tried to do is turn on the lights."

"I got married before I found myself. People should find themselves before they get married."

Part of the reason that I am who I am is my Puritan roots run deep. My folks are Puritan and prohibitionists. There was no drinking in my home. No discussion of sex. And I saw the hurtful and hypocritical side of that from very early on."

"This is the blessing of humankind, what separates us from the animals: to dream."

"When you are in a position to not be a nice person, that's when you find out who you really are."

FYI

A great lover of the Hollywood lifestyle, Hefner saved the iconic Hollywood sign from ruin and the land from being sold to developers.
