Documentary photographer Bruce Davidson has said that style was never part of his vocabulary but his work—currently showing in two galleries in New York and soon released in a box set later this month—contains a haphazard elegance that always finds its way to inspiration boards. Vogue once offered Mr. Davidson an assignment after seeing this 1959 "Brooklyn Gang" series.
