The Secret to
Great Hair?
A Healthy Scalp.

Why you don’t want to skip a scalp scrub

You take care of the skin on your body and on your face, but what do you do about your scalp? Who can blame you if you said “nothing”? There are some products that feel as though they were invented simply to make money. But it turns out, there really is something to this scalp-care boom happening at the moment.

After all, your scalp is just like the skin on the rest of your body—pores can clog, dead cells can (and will) pile up. “But I shampoo,” you'll say. Sorry. But a little squirt of shampoo run through your mop every couple of days isn't enough to cut through layers on layers of sweat, oil and product buildup.

And here's the real kicker: Not caring for your scalp eventually catches up to you and starts impacting the look and feel of your hair. When follicles get blocked, new hair can't grow as easily. Regular exfoliation will remove product residue and dry skin that can build up and affect how well your hair is growing. Especially for those with dry or itchy scalps, this will be your new favorite product. We had the team try out a handful and here are the best ones for men.

This new scrub by Harry's uses both chemical and physical exfoliants to really up the power without making it tough on your scalp. A little of this goes a long way, which makes this drugstore find even more affordable. Not only does this lather up and rinse out easily (so it won't get caught in curls), it's also ideal for dry or damaged hair. It's not only free of parabens, dyes and sulfates, it also strengthens hair and hydrates the scalp with elastin protein and marine minerals.

Best for
Itchy Scalps

If you've got a dry, itchy scalp, you might have an imbalance of the naturally-occurring fungus and bacteria on the scalp. Apple cider vinegar is known to to not just eliminate the issue but also restore the pH balance of your skin. This scrub combines the vinegar and sea salt with avocado oil and aloe vera to soothe your scalp, hydrate the skin and cancel out any future flakiness. And thankfully, there isn't a strong vinegar smell either.

Most Invigorating

Do you like to feel your products working? You'll like this plant-based formula that is gentle yet effective. It's thicker than the others, so you can really work it into the scalp and the cooling menthol tingles in the most satisfying way. And since it's made by French perfumers, it smells really good—a mix of citrus, mint and herbs.

How to Apply

Aim to use your scrub once (maybe twice) a week. You want to target it to your scalp—not the hair, so make sure to part or section off your hair so you can apply directly to the skin. Then massage it in for 30 seconds to a minute using a gentle, circular motion. No need to press hard, let the product do the work. Then rinse and shampoo/condition as normal.
