Billy Reid,

The Boot: Winging It

The first time I saw them, there was something about Billy Reid's Olden boots that seemed very well-mannered. There was that subtle sophistication which comes with a shoe that's been made by hand in an Italian workshop. The supple burnished leather, the charming details and the double-stitched welt on an all-leather sole. There was also the kind of rugged toughness that you'd expect from an Alabama-based designer who likes his whiskey neat and also happens to make a shearling-lined shotgun case.

In short, they're the ideal choice for autumnal footwear. Masculine and hardy enough for your favorite jeans, yet classic and handsome enough to slide under your suit or a pair of flannel trousers for the office or a date. And Mr. Reid's not alone—this season a slew of brands are offering lace-up boots with short wing style brogue detailing. Here are some of the best, in a range of price points.

FYI

The word brogue is derived from the Scottish and Irish Gaelic word "bróg," meaning "shoe."
