Leather

Why

In terms of hardwearing outerwear, it doesn't get more iconic, leading man or badass than a good leather jacket.

Origins

Irving Schott introduced his leather motorcycle jacket, the "Perfecto," in 1928. The first of its kind, it sold for just $5.50. Schott was also the first outerwear company to put a zipper on a jacket.

How to Wear It

Wear them with a basic sweater, a simple T-shirt or even over a button-down with some tweed trousers.

What to Look for

They're a smart buy, but they'll cost you—this is not the place to skimp as cheap leather looks, well, cheap. The real question is standard leather or supple suede?
