Time to Rethink
Frozen Drinks

These refreshing cocktails
are your cure for a strange summer

Summer is a carefree time—usually. Of course, this is not your standard summer. But the sun is shining, the temperatures outside are rising, and a well made frozen cocktail is exactly what you need right now. How do we know? Because we've tried it and they hit just right. Like a hammock, these drinks seem to instantly engage the relaxation centers of your brain. They signal the body to relax and take things slowly. Now, we're not talking about the sickly sweet, neon-colored Slurpee-style drinks that are pulled from machines. We're talking about some of your favorite classics, reengineered to be even more tasty and fun to drink. Herewith, three to get you started ... and make us one while you're at it.

Frozen Negroni

Frozen Negroni

A warm weather cocktail, made even more summer-friendly. This smooth, citrusy drink is like a grown-up snow cone. And we dare you to just have one. The recipe is adapted from Shasha Beard, of Eataly's Sabbia in New York.

In a blender, combine ...

  • 6 oz. orange juice
  • 2 oz. Campari
  • 2 oz. gin
  • 2 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 2 cup ice

And then ...

Blend until smooth and divide between glasses, garnishing each with an orange slice.

If you don't have a blender, try this lemony bourbon slush by Jerry Nevins from his book, Sloshies. It's not quite as thick as the blender drinks, meaning less brain freezes (in case that's a worry).

In a pitcher, combine ...

  • 8 ¾ oz. Bourbon (like Woodford Reserve)
  • 6 oz. simple syrup
  • 7 ¼ oz. mint simple syrup
  • 6 oz. lemon juice
  • 6 oz. lime juice
  • 3 oz. water

And then ...

Pour the liquid into a large freezer bag, and place in the freezer until frozen (about four hours). When ready to drink, massage the bag by hand until it's a slushy consistency. Pour into a glass and garnish with lemon and mint leaf.

Frozen Gin & Tonic

This idea came from our favorite tonic syrup maker, Brook Reitz of Jack Rudy. The tonic's sharp bittersweet combination of lemongrass and orange peel really shine in this. Some frozen cocktails can veer too sweet—but not this one.

Purée until slushy and pour into a rocks glass and garnish with a cucumber slice.

The Best Blenders

When you're mixing up frozen drinks at home, you want to aim for a smooth texture (no chunks of fruit or ice but just the right amount of slushiness). That means you need a blender that can crush ice into a fine snow-like texture. These bartender-reviewed models do just that.
