Fool-Proof Tie Lineup

Every man should have at least five neckties. And ideally, those ties would be slender (not skinny) and in a variety of fabrications to suit a number of sartorial situations. Yet simple enough to be easily repeated if necessary. Here are some suggestions for your essential tie lineup.

Knit

Mostly knit from silk (and wool in the winter), it's perfect for dressing up your jeans and button-down while still looking relaxed and cool.

Example: The Knottery

Cotton

A lightweight, casual option for when you're rocking a denim jacket, a khaki suit or rolled-up sleeves in the spring and summer.

Example: Pierrepont Hicks

Repp Stripe

An old school favorite that's been increasing in popularity with the return of Trad style. Wear them in a range of colors year-round.

Example: J.Crew

Dark & Narrow

Look at any old photo of a well dressed man and it's almost always the same: light shirt, dark slim tie. Eternally classic.

Example: Spencer Hart

Embroidered

Whether it's stitched with preppy critters, academic crests or simple polka dots, they're just conventional enough to be ironically stylish.

Example: The Tie Bar

Maintenance

We asked Andy Tarshis of New York's Tiecrafters, a one-stop shop that's been tailoring, cleaning and restoring neckwear for 50 years, for the best way to care for your ties. Here's what he had to say.
