Waking up and setting intentions with the minimalist grooming guru

Jack Henry Founder Kyle Bardouche

Kyle Bardouche is a minimalist through and through. He has no need for anything extraneous. He prefers to keep things clean. Literally. His wardrobe? A pristine collection of the best tees and jeans. Adding cream or sugar to coffee? Nah. Synthetic chemicals into the products he creates for Jack Henry, his line of grooming essentials? Again, that's a “no.” The brand was founded in 2017 after Bardouche's first born was blessed with a healthy mane of hair. When Kyle went to smooth it with his store-bought pomade, he and his wife discovered over two dozen hard-to-pronounce chemicals. They figured they could make something a little better—something that was natural, effective and much less worrisome for everyone involved. The result was Jack Henry's first product: a clay pomade that became extremely popular with guys that valued their health as much as their style. From there, the brand has since expanded the line to include not only hair products but skincare and deodorant as well. We caught up with the man behind the line one sunny California morning to see how he gets it all done.

The Series

Those moments between turning off the alarm and getting into our work routine can be the most defining 60 minutes of our day. Benjamin Franklin set a day's worth of plans by 5 am and Steve Jobs asked a simple question: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" Our rituals are a reflection of us. So we've ventured out to discover how some of our most influential and fruitful peers get started.

My Routine

We could all use more sleep, right?

I really try to get at least seven hours a night, but typically it's around six to seven hours of quality sleep.

I really have no need for an alarm clock.

I wake up naturally with the sun around 6:30 am. But that's only because my three kids usually come running in and jump on the bed.

There’s always water next to my bed.

I actually don't have a nightstand. I'm super minimal, but I do keep a glass of water next to my bedside. Never without water.

Right when I wake up I do a little breathwork.

It's not long—only about three minutes. But I do it before I even get out of bed while I'm still laying down. This helps me bring some calmness and wellbeing into my day, because once I'm out of bed it's basically non-stop until 10 pm.

I really believe your first 60 minutes will set the tone for your entire day.

I try not to check my phone for the first hour I am up until I leave the house. So when I wake up, I do my breathwork, then I get up and the first thing is I down some water—20 ounces, at least—and take my supplements. Then I either make breakfast for the fam or take our dog out for a walk. Afterwards, get the children dressed and ready for the day, then I shower and head to our HQ in San Diego.

I’ve really been into making smoothies lately.

I've done the whole intermittent fasting before, but I really function best if I have some greens for fuel in the morning. The mix I've been enjoying lately is some kale, spinach, collards, coconut meat, pomegranates and blackberries. Toss it in the Vitamix and you're good to go.

Most of the time, I pick up some coffee on the way to the office.

Sometimes I'll splurge and pick up coffee and doughnuts for the team at Sidecar. I take my coffee straight black—the stronger the better. Be on the lookout though, we'll be launching a small batch of organic beans for the holiday that sold out super quick last year.

Fitness and being active daily is a big part of my life and health.

I used to be into weight lifting and CrossFit because I wanted to look good, but in the past couple of years, I care more about how I feel—so my routine has completely changed. Meditating and breathwork plays a large part in what I do. But I also am obsessed with mixing my fitness up with our Peloton bike or doing yoga in the morning. It not only provides the physical activity I need, but it gives me mental clarity and calmness. I also do an infrared sauna and cryotherapy a few times a week.

During the pandemic, I’ve taken more time for myself and my well-being.

I started yoga and meditation and wondered why it took me so long to discover those practices.

I keep things old-school and write a list out by hand in my notebook.

I just love the feeling of crossing something off because I can see the progress we're making. A successful time-management system I've used is time chunking when I'm overwhelmed and that helps me concentrate on one task at a time.

Setting intention is really important to me.

Before I get started with work, I make sure to set some intentions and will try to have at least three goals to finish for the day.

I’d describe my grooming routine as straightforward and simple.

The whole reason I started Jack Henry was to simplify not only the ingredients I was putting on my body, but also my routine. I use our Cleanse+ to wash my face and entire body while in the shower. After I get out of the shower, I towel dry my hair, then move into my skincare routine which consists of massaging a few drops of our Face Toner on my face and then applying our Super Face Oil. Then I'll apply a little Clay, working it through my roots and massaging it through my hair. The entire routine takes less than three mins.

My style is definitely “minimalist.”

Most of my closet is gray, white and black. I'm minimal so I usually figure out what I'm wearing in the morning unless we're having a party or an event. But I typically wear a Lady White Co. pocket T-shirt, Acne Studios river black jeans and some plain sneakers like Common Projects Achilles.
